  •   IMG_6483  Last Saturday, Jonathan participated in a 15 mi. canoe race down the St. Croix river.  A friend had set it up just for fun with a potluck picnic for the families at the state park where they finished.  It turned out to be a "bluebird day", perfect for canoeing.  10 canoes gathered at the starting line, the paddlers received their instructions, a prayer was prayed for safety and fun, and the race was on.  They had to start off running around a big tree, hop into their canoes and paddle out.  Jonathan and his friend were nearly the last to get in their canoe, but were strategically placed to pull ahead of the fray immediately.  It worked well to their advantage and they finished 2nd, losing only to a 29 year old and his 18 year old teammate.

Monday night and Tuesday, we had the pleasure of a visit from my brother, Zach.  He was traveling through on his way back to Charlotte, NC from Mom's house. Phil had the presence of mind to take a picture of the kids with Zach before he left.  Jonathan is missing from the picture because we had just left for a chiropractic appointment.  We recently noticed that Jonathan's latest growing spurt had left a large difference in the length of his legs.  He had x-rays on Tuesday and was given a temporary (we hope) lift.  We are praying that as he continues to grow the right leg will catch up with the left.

  • Bayfield, WI

HPIM1450  July, 27 Phil & I took our first overnight trip, leaving Jonathan in charge.  We had been invited by some friends to Bayfield, WI  to use an extra pair of concert tickets.  Bayfield is on the south shore of Lake Superior.  It is where to catch the ferry to Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands.  The day was gorgeous - apparently one of those few perfect summer days on Lake Superior.  Bayfield is quaint, with lots of little shops, bed & breakfasts, fruit festivals and great views.  The concert was at the Big Top Chautauqua, a big circus tent set up at a ski hill to generate summer income.

We spent the night at the most reasonably priced lodgings with availability on such short notice (48 hours).  It turned out to be right around the corner from the concert venue with an awesome view of the bay.  It was a quiet little place with 6 rooms and big swings out front where we sipped coffee and watched the sun come up over the water.  It was a nice way to start a new week.  Just the 2 of us.
